Lotte Fondse (1993, NL) lives and works in Rotterdam
The foundation of my work is the admiration that I have for public space and what my relationship is in regard to this. In my work I have defined the boundaries of public space and the way we are inseparable from it. I think of public space the same way I think of private space. It is a space that, just like any other space, can be confined to literal and figurative boundaries. Not only that, it is a space that is used by many to travel through at various speeds while making various movements. While doing this, people ,both consciously and unconsciously, leave traces of themselves behind. It is these movements and speeds within public spaces which I have chosen to focus on. People create public spaces, they create them not only by spatial planning but also by their presence within these places. With their presence, people, both literally and figuratively, define the boundaries of public spaces. Everyone is able to use public spaces and everyone can make it their own.
